Achievements

Following are the achievements of the Institute:

  • Varieties evolved: 17 (Bari-zaitoon-1, Bari-zaitoon-2, Jerboui, Picual, Picholine, Manzanilla, Hojiblanca, Pendolino, Hamdi, Arbosana, Ascolana, Gemlik, Koroneiki, Arbequina, Chemlali, Earlik, Gohar)
  • 73 Field Survey in Pothwar area were conducted.
  • Fifteen adaptability sites surveyed and selected for olive plantation in different districts of Southern Punjab including Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Cholistan), Muzaffar Garh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan.
  • Twenty research experiments were executed regarding Olive value addition, nursery management, and diseases control and nutrition management of olive tree.
  • Four olive multiplication blocks were established; one in Public (CEFORT, Chakwal) and 03 in Private Sector.
  • Ten promising olive varieties were selected from Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtun Kha to strengthen the existing germplasm of CEFORT, Chakwal.
  • More farmers encouraged to utilize the marginal lands in pothwar area and getting income from (additional use of) these lands, thus providing a sustainable means of living.
  • Development of cottage industry including pickle making and other products enabled communities - men and women - to further enhance their income, living standard and health.

Achievement regarding global warming

  • Olive is a good carbon sink, and therefore, considered a potential climate change intervention for rehabilitation of erosion hit lands into green and profitable orchards.
