LUCERNE was probably the first crop to be cultivated for hay. It is indigenous to Mesopotamia. Lucerne is today the most important fodder crop grown under irrigation in the Karoo and because of the high yields obtained, its palatability and high feeding value, is known as the King of fodder crops.
