Developing Pothwar into an Olive Valley (BARI, Chakwal)

​Objectives

  • Olive cultivation on 15,100 acres of land with provision of 2,038,500 certified nursery plants
  • Need-based promotional incentives like water source development and drip irrigation system to farmers through private sector
  • Capacity building of private sector for acclimatization of nursery plants, and provision of technical assistance to olive growers for layout, plantation, orchard and irrigation management

  • Plants provided = 12,92,996 (98 % completed of revised PC-1) 
  • Training of nursery growers= 5 Nos.
  • Training of plant provider firms=  10 Nos.
  • Olive awareness campaign=  20 Nos.
  • Olive awareness campaign (Field days & press advertisements)
  • Procurement of  olive nursery plants
  • Need-based water source development for olive plantation 
  • Olive Plantation in Pothwar with provision of on-farm services to growers for orchard establishment & management
  • Training of plant provider and service provider firms
  • Training of technical staff of  Agri. Extension (TOT) in project districts 
  • Training of technical Nursery growers

Expected Outcome  

  • 42880 plants issued to 49 farmers for olive plantation on 318 acres out of 518 acres.
  • 70000 certified nursery plants received from bidder (Izhar Group @ Rs. 260/plant).
  • 57 Farmers being provided services for orchard establishment and management.
  • Verification of 20 farmers done after completion of olive plantation.
  • A team from DG (M&E), P&D Department conducted Monitoring of Olive Valley Project on 24-25 November, 2021. 2nd will be done in December.
  • Increase in production of edible oil in the country with premium quality
  • Better income and profitability for rural farming communities in dryland areas
  • Job creation for rural poor through engagement in olive orchard management
  • Diverting available water resources to production of high value crops 
  • Developing trained manpower in olive orchard business in public and private sector 
  • Climate action: sustainable rehabilitation of marginal lands prone to land desertification
